VIth EKN Course

Animal models of neurologic and psychiatric disorders

Laboratory animal research continuously contributes to improved understanding of human neurologic and psychiatric disorders. Clinical and animal research efforts result in increased knowledge of underlying pathophysiological mechanisms and allow development of innovative preventive and therapeutic measures.

This EKN course offers a unique forum for clinicians and basic researchers alike. Major topics in the field of neurology (dementia, neuropathy, myastenia, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, mental retardation, stroke) and psychiatry (affective disorders, obsessive compulsive disorders and schizophrenia) will be covered by clinicians and animal researchers. For each topic the clinician will introduce the clinical hallmarks and define unresolved questions. The animal researcher will give a state of the art with regard to available models and models under development. Each topic will be concluded by an interactive discussion focussing on progress made with regard to model validity, applicability and generalizability.
