Program meeting for EKN symposium
Regulation of Synaptic Transmission
,

December 12, 1997
Amsterdam (main lecture room of CWI)

Neuronal communication takes place by virtue of chemical signaling across the synapse. Diverse neurotransmitters are secreted from the presynaptic compartment in a regulated way, and activate specific receptors located at opposing postsynaptic membrane. Subsequently, clearance of these transmitters from the synaptic cleft determines the time and spatial shape of the synaptic response. Impairment of transsynaptic signaling at any level in this cascade may have pathological consequenses.

In this symposium, different regulatory events in synaptic transmission will be introduced. Distinguished investigators will treat the subject from the molecular to the organismal level, based on studies with animals and human material. Participation in this symposium will inform you about the current concepts in regulation of synaptic transmission.
